Republicans on the North Carolina Court of Appeals agreed last week to throw out 65,000+ voters in the 2024 NC Supreme Court election if their ballots aren’t “cured” within 15 business days — setting the stage for Republican Jefferson Griffin to make his 2024 loss into a win.
[UPDATE: The North Carolina Supreme Court on Monday temporarily suspended that 15-day deadline. Monday’s temporary stay does not mean the Supreme Court will side against Griffin. Several Republican justices have already reportedly expressed support for Griffin’s position.
The State Board of Elections says that anyone concerned that their ballot will be tossed can take steps now to head that off.]
Here’s how to find out if you’re on that list, and how to fix your ballot ASAP if you’re one of the 60,000 or so voters who Griffin is challenging because the state lacks information such as a driver’s license number or a Social Security number.
- Search the list at https://thegriffinlist.com/ to find out if you’re on it.
- If you are, you need to provide updated information to your county board of elections ASAP. Don’t wait to to do it.
- If you have a driver’s license, you can update that info quickly by filling out a new voter registration form at payments.ncdot.gov. Since you’re already registered, filling this out will update your info. Republicans are targeting people who haven’t provided a driver’s license or Social Security number, so make sure to include that.
- If you don’t have a driver’s license, go to ncsbe.gov/registering. Print out a voter registration form. Fill it out and submit it ASAP to your local board of elections. Find your local board’s address and contact info at this link — https://vt.ncsbe.gov/BOEInfo/
There is another pool of voters, about 5,000 or so military or overseas voters, that is being challenged because they did not provide a photo ID with their vote. [Editor’s Note: That’s not their fault. On Election Day, they were not required to, and there was no mechanism for them to do that.] However, if you are one of those voters and you want to address this, the State Board of Elections says you can provide a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID or a photo ID exception form. Photo IDs may be submitted by email, by mail or commercial carrier, in person at the county board office, or by fax.
This case is being appealed to higher courts, but don’t wait to take steps, state election officials say. The sooner you remedy this, the sooner you remove the possibility that Republicans’ court case strips you of your vote in the 2024 NC Supreme Court race.
